Calm answers at 2 a.m.

Most people don't think about gallbladder surgery until they're in pain at 2 a.m. wondering if it's gas or something worse. When that moment comes, what your family wants is calm answers, a team that has done this many times before, and a small incision that has you home the next day.

That's the work of Amadeo's laparoscopic suite. Dr. Charles Rockhead and the surgical team perform more than 200 minimally invasive procedures a year here in Spanish Town — second only to the University Hospital of the West Indies for laparoscopic volume on the island. The instruments are the same Harmonic Scalpel and LigaSure systems used in major hospital surgical suites; the building is private, the wait is short, and the people you meet at consultation are the people in the operating theatre.

Smaller incisions. Bigger results.

The patients on our table

Six procedures cover the vast majority of the work in our laparoscopic suite. Same-day discharge is the norm for most.

Cholecystectomy

Gallbladder removal — our most common procedure. Same-day discharge for patients with gallstones, biliary pain, or cholecystitis.

Hernia Repair

Inguinal, umbilical, incisional. Three small incisions with mesh reinforcement. Most patients back to light work in a week.

Appendectomy

Emergency cases handled the same day they present. Laparoscopic approach keeps the hospital stay to one night.

Gynaecological Surgery

Hysterectomy, ovarian-cyst removal, endometriosis. Performed alongside Dr. Rockhead's gynaecology practice — minimal surgical footprint.

Diagnostic Laparoscopy

When imaging and bloodwork can't give a clear answer. Surgeons see the abdomen and pelvis directly without committing to a larger operation.

Adhesiolysis

Careful release of scar tissue from previous surgeries. Performed laparoscopically when chronic pain or bowel obstruction makes it necessary.

What the small incisions buy you

Open surgery versus laparoscopic incision size comparison illustration — 15-20cm linear incision next to three 5-12mm laparoscopic ports

An open operation cuts through 15 to 20 centimetres of tissue to do what laparoscopy does through three small holes of 5 to 12 millimetres. The arithmetic of that difference shows up in everything that follows.

Harmonic Scalpel and LigaSure laparoscopic surgical instruments at Amadeo Medical Group Spanish Town Jamaica

The same tools the largest surgical suites use

Amadeo's theatre is equipped with the Harmonic Scalpel for ultrasonic cutting and coagulation, and LigaSure for advanced vessel sealing. These are the same energy-based instruments used in the largest hospital surgical suites — in a private Spanish Town setting where your family doesn't sit through a public-hospital queue.

The arithmetic on the equipment matters at the operating table: precise tissue management, less blood loss, and faster operative times. For the patient, that translates into the recovery profile you just read about.

Why families choose Amadeo for surgery

Three things, repeatedly: volume, equipment, and continuity of care.

Equipment

Harmonic Scalpel for ultrasonic cutting and coagulation. LigaSure for advanced vessel sealing. The same energy-based instruments used in the largest hospital surgical suites — in a private Spanish Town setting.

Continuity

Pre-op cardiac clearance, anaesthesia review, internal medicine consults, and post-discharge follow-up — all with Amadeo specialists you've already met. No shuttling between three clinics to clear one operation. The surgeon you meet at consultation is the surgeon in the operating theatre.

Over 30,000 families have come through these doors. You and yours will be in great hands.

Laparoscopic Surgery FAQ

What is laparoscopic surgery?

A minimally invasive technique where the surgeon makes small 5–12mm incisions and inserts a thin camera (a laparoscope) along with specialised instruments. The internal view appears magnified on a monitor, letting the surgeon work with precision without a large open cut. At Amadeo we use this approach for gallbladder removal, hernia repair, gynaecological procedures, appendectomy, and diagnostic work.

How long is the recovery?

Most patients go home within 24–48 hours. Light activity returns within a few days; full recovery is typically 1–2 weeks, compared to 4–6 weeks for open surgery. Our team gives you personalised post-op instructions and schedules a follow-up at our Spanish Town clinic within one to two weeks of your procedure.

What procedures do you perform laparoscopically?

Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical, incisional), appendectomy, hysterectomy, ovarian cyst removal, endometriosis surgery, diagnostic laparoscopy, and adhesiolysis. Our operating theatre is equipped with Harmonic Scalpel and LigaSure technology for precise, low-trauma work across all of these.

How much does laparoscopic surgery cost?

Cost depends on the specific procedure, anaesthesia, and length of stay. Amadeo works with most major Jamaican health insurance providers; pre-authorisation is required. Call us at (876) 676-5098 for a consultation where we can review your case, give you an estimate, and walk through your coverage.

Am I a candidate for laparoscopic surgery?

Most patients needing abdominal or pelvic surgery are candidates. Previous surgeries, BMI, and the complexity of the condition can affect suitability — our team evaluates each case individually during your consultation and recommends the safest, most effective approach for your situation.
